Papallacta is a town located in the Napo Province at the North-East of Quito, close to the Amazonian border. To get there, you would need around 2 hours bus. This excursion is perfect for people who want to have some relaxing time.
During the first trip part and surrounded by green slopes, you would maybe hear about the “El Dorado” legend. Because of the Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Orellana story, people were looking for a hidden city in the Amazon, entirely made of gold ... city which until nowadays have never been found. On the way to reach Termas Papallacta, you would stop twice. The first time, you would enjoy discovering a small chapel along the road and, if the weather allows it, the view on the giant Antisana volcano. The second one would be a stop close to a magnificent lake.
Papallacta, which name means the potatoes land, is nationwide known thanks to its thermal waters. There, the water comes directly from surrounding volcanoes (the Cayambe and Antisana volcanoes) allowing pools to have water temperatures between 36 and 40ºC (97 to 104º F). This water, naturally rich in minerals, has medicinal properties fighting against pains, bloodstream problems, insomnias… Contrary to some preconceived notions, the water is out of flavor or color which could be caused by any sulfur or others minerals.
More than enjoying pools and hydromassage jets, you could also book for massages depending on your preferences. Choice between a hot stones massage, oriental massage or even reflexology would be offered.
Going swimming in pools will give you more than healthy advantages. How many people could boast to take care of oneself without suffering, and at the same time admiring the incredible view on hills, paper trees, and orchids? Floral displays, vases, rocks and water jets would know how to delight you!
I came home relaxed.
